Superintendent

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Concrete Superintendent is responsible for managing all on-site activities related to concrete construction, with an emphasis on safety, productivity, sequencing, and quality control. This role requires deep technical understanding of concrete forming, placing, finishing, and curing, as well as the ability to lead crews and coordinate subcontractors to meet project milestones and budget constraints.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safety Management
    • Enforce jobsite safety practices in compliance with OSHA and company standards.
    • Conduct daily safety talks and pre-task plans specific to concrete operations (e.g., shoring, formwork, pour days).
    • Monitor for potential safety hazards and take proactive/preventive measures.
  • Scheduling
    • Develop and maintain short- and long-term concrete work schedules.
    • Sequence pours to align with structural milestones.
    • Communicate impacts to upstream and downstream trades.
  • Subcontractor & Crew Coordination
    • Direct daily activities of concrete crews and coordinate with rebar, formwork, pump, and finish subcontractors.
    • Ensure labor, materials, and equipment are in place ahead of scheduled work.
    • Validate crew productivity and adjust resources to maintain pace.
    • Understanding of labor cost management in association with productivity goals.
  • Site Layout & Staging
    • Plan and manage laydown areas for formwork, rebar, pump access, and material deliveries.
    • Coordinate crane or pump truck access with logistics and safety in mind.
    • Technical understanding of survey equipment and best practices.
  • Quality Control
    • Implement concrete placement best practices including slump testing, temperature control, and proper finishing methods.
    • Verify installation of embeds, anchor bolts, and edge forms per structural drawings.
    • Partner with project engineers and third-party testing firms to review concrete break results and adjust mix designs or curing plans as needed.
    • Technical understanding of ACI requirements for concrete construction.
  • Equipment & Materials
    • Identify equipment needs such as vibrators, screeds, and forming systems.
    • Coordinate with suppliers on formwork systems, concrete delivery timing, and finishing materials.
  • Leadership
    • Train and mentor foremen, craft workers and project engineers on concrete techniques and jobsite expectations.
    • Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and performance within the concrete team.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred but not required with equivalent field experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years of field experience in structural or site concrete construction.
  • Strong understanding of concrete forming systems, placement logistics, finish work, and scheduling.
  • Effective communication, field leadership, and crew management skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) and construction scheduling software (e.g., MS Project, P6 `).
  • OSHA-30 certification required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
